As a photographer experimenting in nude and erotic photography, my first encounter with shooting Shibari marked a significant departure from my usual work. With the guidance and navigation of a sex educator friend who was well-versed in Shibari, I delved into the realm of ropes, knots, and bound intimacy.
Partnering with my friend, who also served as the model, opened up a new world of artistic exploration. The initial setup was simple: a bedroom space, basic background, and the essential ropes that would play a central role in the images. As the ropes began to envelop her body, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the meticulous process.
Black and white photography proved to be the perfect choice for capturing the interplay between the starkness of the ropes and the softness of the her skin. This style stripped away distractions, focusing attention on the textures, shapes, and contrast from dark ropes with pale skin within each frame.
Shibari requires Collaboration and Trust
Being that this was my first encounter shooting Shibari I was trying to learn as much as possible. Throughout the shoot, my role extended beyond that of just photographer. I found myself assisting in the mechanics of the knots and ensuring everything was secure and comfortable for my friend. This tactile involvement created an beautiful connection between me, the model, and the art we were creating.
The Power of the Human Form bound in rope
As the shoot progressed, my initial apprehension transformed into excitement. The ropes, once unfamiliar, became extensions of my creative vision. With each click of the shutter, I documented the trust and collaboration that unfolded before me.
My first experience with shooting Shibari was an eye-opening journey into vulnerability, trust, and the unique connections that art fosters. The resulting images, bathed in black and white, reflect the intimate and empowering nature of the collaboration. This experience taught me that art knows no boundaries, and that venturing beyond one’s comfort zone can yield rewarding results.
Sex-ed in a new light.
The cool thing about my friend is that she is also a sex educator. She practices a method called Somatica and it is absolutely beautiful and liberating. You can visit her site mamietheintimacycoach.com
